In a bid to accelerate sales of affordable electric vehicles in the market, Tata Motors plans to expand its battery subscription ownership plan. It is expected to make entry-level EVs more accessible to buyers shopping for less than Rs. 12 thousand – a segment that represents huge annual sales volumes but contributes only a small part of the spread of electric cars in the country.

Under this flexible purchasing scheme, customers can either pay the full ex-showroom cost up front or choose a discounted purchase price – along with a usage-related battery charge. For example, the recently launched Punch EV model was listed at Rs. 9.69 lakh while the subscription format brings the initial price down to Rs. 6.49 thousand.

For battery usage, rental charges are Rs. You must pay 2.6 per kilometer. The company believes this format can help neutralize key hurdles that often discourage first-time EV owners, such as higher purchase costs, uncertainty about driving range, and tax differences compared to gasoline cars. With India’s lower price ranges collectively generating over 30 lakh passenger vehicle sales every year, a simple shift towards electrification could be a huge volume puller.

At present, about 10% of buyers opting for the small compact SUV range opt for the electric version while cleaner propulsion options including CNG variants account for more than 40% of the total demand. Internal forecasts suggest that the share of electricity alone could rise to the 15 to 20 percent range in the near future before reaching nearly a third by 2030.

It is encouraging that some regions have shown increasing acceptance above the national average. Cities like Jaipur and states like Kerala have reported adoption levels approaching 30 to 40 percent for clean technologies, indicating that supporting infrastructure and awareness can significantly influence purchasing behavior.

Tata expects the introduction of larger battery options to further boost demand by improving usability for long inter-city journeys. In the future, the automaker intends to introduce the subscription-based battery approach across more electric models with future products developed from the beginning as EV-only offerings.
