Mahindra doesn’t play it safe with the BE 6 Formula E Edition, and frankly, it shouldn’t. This is an electric SUV designed specifically for motorsport enthusiasts, who want their daily driver to scream Formula E heritage. At first glance, the racing DNA seems aggressive and unmistakable, but this is no fragile car intended for the base. It’s a grounded, road-ready machine that wears its distinctive identity on its sleeve, both on the roof of the car and inside the cockpit.
The lineup is divided into two models, FE2 and FE3, priced at INR 23.69 lakh and INR 24.49 lakh respectively. Underneath, they are identical twins that share the same battery and motor. The extra cash for the FE3 buys you toys like adaptive suspension and ambient carpet lighting. Essentially, your choice isn’t about how fast you go, but how much “theater” you want during your morning commute.
Visually, this thing makes the BE 6 standard look anonymous. A black, red, orange and white color palette provides a high-contrast canvas for some smart details. The face is the real hero here; Round LED headlights and a redesigned bumper give it a frowning, purposeful look. My favorite Easter egg? The 12 stripes on the bumper are a subtle nod to Mahindra’s 12 seasons on the Formula E grid that only true geeks will be able to catch.
The rest of the exterior avoids being a hair’s breadth tacky. The broad outlines of the white headlights add a sharp edge, while the 20-inch alloys give it a massive, solid appearance. You get splashes of Firestorm Orange and matching brake calipers showing through the rims, plus the obligatory FIA and Formula E badges. It’s noisy, yes, but it’s finished with enough finesse to avoid looking like an aftermarket job.
High energy
Inside, the cabin keeps the adrenaline high without feeling claustrophobic. Orange accents stand out on the dark materials on the steering wheel, start button and seat stitching. Having “Formula E” emblazoned on the headrests is one thing, but extending the branding to the seatbelts is a bold touch that really enhances the look. It feels like a cockpit, not just another cockpit.
Tech-wise, the dashboard is dominated by two super displays and a 16-speaker Harman Kardon system that sounds great thanks to Dolby Atmos. The Snapdragon 8155 chipset maintains a fast interface, and supports wireless smartphone mirroring for easy daily use. Between the terrain-style controller and aluminum pedals, the vibe is pure performance. However, the materials feel luxurious enough to justify its price.
Safety remains front and center. With six airbags, a 360-degree camera, and a blind-spot monitor, it handles the chaos of city traffic with a sense of security. The chassis feels remarkably solid and the brake-by-wire system provides the kind of consistent stopping points you need when exploiting the engine. With the availability of 5G connectivity, this technology appears safe for the future over the next few years.
On paper, the value is hard to ignore. We’re talking about sending over 200 horsepower to the rear wheels for roughly INR 25 lakh on-road, a performance-to-price ratio that would have been unimaginable five years ago. Interestingly, Mahindra isn’t obsessed with boring range statistics here. This car is all about propulsion, which makes electric speed seem like a treat rather than a benefit.
But what about the range anxiety that plagues most EV discussions? Both Formula E models come exclusively with a larger 79 kWh battery pack, which carries an official range of 683 kilometers according to ARAI. In the real world, you can comfortably expect between 450km and 500km, depending on how heavy your right foot is. It is worth noting that the FE3’s stylish 20-inch wheels reduce the range by about 30 kilometers compared to smaller rims. However, for a performance-focused car, the Endurance remains surprisingly practical over long weekends.
Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h takes 6.7 seconds, but it’s the feel that matters most. It doesn’t give you that nauseating EV kick. Instead, even in boost mode, the power is a smooth, relentless wave. It feels sophisticated rather than hectic. This composure makes it a great daily driver. Overtaking is a breeze, and regenerative braking is tuned to be natural rather than jerky. Even on those big 20-inch wheels, the adaptive suspension is able to soak up the sharp edges of broken tarmac surprisingly well. The rear-wheel-drive setup is the cherry on top, giving the BE 6 a balance and agility that front-wheel-drive competitors can’t replicate.
The BE 6 Formula E Edition feels like Mahindra finding its swagger. It’s a confident combination of bold design, strong performance, and a deep feature list. If I’m wrong, the orange-heavy cabin may be a bit heavy for some and the dashboard layout is a bit busy.
However, Mahindra deserves credit for building an electric car that speaks to the heart, not just a spreadsheet. It doesn’t advise you to go green, but it invites enthusiasts to see that electric driving can be emotional, fast and truly fun. For a buyer who wants an SUV with a legitimate racing connection, this is a loud, refreshing statement in a segment known for its silence.
