Vehicular movement on Delhi’s roads was disrupted since early Thursday as rain continued throughout the night, which turned into heavy rain in the morning, leaving several major roads submerged with water and office workers stranded during the morning rush hour. Delhi Traffic Police said it received at least 12 calls related to traffic jams in more than 10 areas across the city.

Besides Ghazipur border, waterlogging was reported from Pandav Nagar Tunnel, Anand Vihar-Dilshad Garden Bridge, the tunnel near Anand Vihar railway station, and near Geeta Colony crematorium. (Archive photo/PTI)

Among the worst affected were the stretch from Ghazipur to Delhi-Meerut Expressway and National Highway 9 (NH 9), Mehrauli-Badarpur Road near Okhla More, the stretch from Nehru Place to Chirag Delhi, roads in Delhi Cantonment near Dhaula Kuan and Mahipalpur, and most of the stretches in Dwarka.

“The Delhi-Meerut Expressway and its parallel NH-9 are a lifeline for tens of thousands of Ghaziabad and Meerut residents who work in Delhi and Gurugram. But on Thursday morning, it took an hour and a half to reach India Gate from Indirapuram in Ghaziabad, which usually takes 40 minutes by car,” said Shubham Kumar, a government employee.

Besides Ghazipur border, waterlogging was reported from Pandav Nagar Tunnel, Anand Vihar-Dilshad Garden Bridge, the tunnel near Anand Vihar railway station, and near Geeta Colony crematorium.

Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Dinesh Kumar Gupta said: “Personnel have been deployed in adequate numbers on roads reported due to waterlogging and traffic jams. We have worked with civic agencies to remove the waterlogged stretches using pumps.”
