Tamil Nadu is governed by many prominent figures from both the Dravidian and Indian National Congress parties. Since 1947, the Prime Minister’s role has evolved from leading the Madras Presidency to the Tamil Nadu State, which was officially renamed in 1969.

  • Renaming the country: During C. N. Annadurai’s tenure in 1969, the state was officially renamed from Madras State to Tamil Nadu.
  • Longest service: M Karunanidhi holds the record for the most terms as Prime Minister, having served five different times over four decades.
