Jake Reiner, the son of Hollywood director Rob Reiner and his wife Michelle Reiner, has spoken about his family tragedy that saw his brother Nick Reiner charged with the murder of their parents in December 2025.
“Nothing can prepare you for what it feels like to instantly lose both parents at the same time. It’s too devastating to comprehend. I still wake up every morning convincing myself that this isn’t a dream. This truly is the nightmare of my life,” Reiner wrote in a Substack post.
The famous Hollywood film director and his wife were murdered in their home, by their son Nick Reiner, who was charged with murder in their deaths and remains in prison until the criminal trial.
“We lost more than half of our family that night in the most brutal way imaginable. Sure, any loss of a parent is devastating, but nothing compares to losing both at the same time, and on top of that, to have your brother at the center of the problem. This is almost impossible to process,” Reiner insisted.
He recalled the moment on December 14 when he received a phone call from his sister Romi that his father, 78, had died. Minutes later came another call saying his mother, Michelle Rayner, 70, had also died.
“The 45-minute Lyft ride from downtown to the West Side was unbearable. My world, as I knew it, had collapsed. I was in a trance. The only thing I could focus on was that I needed to get to my childhood home. I needed to get to my sister. I needed to figure out what the hell had just happened,” he wrote.
Reiner praised his parents for being the center of his life: “They are my guiding lights, the foundation of who I am as a human being, and the most giving people I have ever known. Not many people have the luxury of having the best parents, or the best mom, or the best dad, but I did. The love they have for me and my brother and sister is truly unconditional. The love they have for each other in their marriage is something I’ve always looked to as a benchmark for the love they have for me and my brother and sister. What a successful relationship looks like.”

But I would trade every Dodger game, every Broadway show, every holiday, if I could just spend an extra hour talking to them and saying goodbye,” Jake Reiner wrote.
The son of Rob and Michelle Rayner added answers as to why his parents were murdered by Nick Rayner – who has pleaded not guilty to killing his father and mother – will eventually come and the speculation will be put to rest.
Meanwhile, Jake Reiner demands privacy for his family while he and his sister deal with their grief and the discomfort of others. He added: “A lot of people have said to me, ‘I don’t even know what to say,’ and I don’t blame them. If I hadn’t been in the middle of this shit storm, I wouldn’t have known what else to say. It’s very specific. And very dark.”
He concluded, “What the hell do you say to someone living this reality? The truth is, there’s nothing to say. I’m just asking for love and compassion – the same principles my parents lived by.”
