Christopher Nolan has directed everything from sci-fi thrillers like… Interstellar, Tenet and beginning To historical dramas such as Dunkirk and Oppenheimersecrets like Prestige and souvenir And superhero movies with him Dark Knight Triple. But there’s one genre the Oscar-winning director said he’d be “terrified” to tackle: romantic comedies.
During his first appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon On Thursday, Nolan discussed his efforts to make his film adaptation of Homer’s Greek Odyssey Odyssey on 70mm IMAX cameras, making it the first feature film to do so. Fallon jokingly asked the director if he’d ever consider doing an “easy” next movie, specifically asking: “How about a Christopher Nolan rom-com?”
“I think doing a romantic comedy would be very difficult,” Nolan replied. “I love watching those movies. But, no, I think the people who direct comedy, the people who make comedy, I think that’s one of the hardest things in the world to make people laugh like that.”
“Especially the risks they take,” he continued. “When you make a movie…you know, if you show people a movie and maybe they don’t respond to parts of it, I say, ‘Oh, they don’t get it.’ Whatever.’ There’s no hiding behind it when you do comedy.
When it comes to this type of film, Nolan admitted, “I would be terrified to do anything like that.”
While romantic comedies aren’t on his radar, horror is another story. In a recent interview with Hollywood ReporterNolan was asked if Odyssey It whetted his appetite for directing a horror film, as it had many horror-like scenes.
“It whets my appetite for more,” he replied.
“But I’ve always thought that horror as a genre has to be approached very carefully from a conceptual standpoint. In other words, you have to have an amazing idea,” Nolan added. “When you go to see a movie like maniaThis is a great idea. This movie works like a motherfucker. It’s not about the technical side. It’s not about an artistic itch that I’m going to have to scratch. It’s about the story. So I’m always looking.”
