These statements come at a time when Europe is suffering from one of the most severe heat waves ever recorded. France, the Netherlands and Belgium recorded a combined 3,700 additional deaths during the June heatwave, Reuters reported, and authorities warned the numbers were preliminary and could rise further.
France was the most affected, with 2,025 excess deaths recorded during the heat wave. French Health Minister Stephanie Rest said there was a particularly sharp increase in deaths among people over the age of 45.According to experts, the heat wave, which lasted from June 20 to 28, was among the worst ever recorded across Europe. Rising temperatures have disrupted power generation, damaged infrastructure, and put enormous pressure on health care systems in many countries.
