Jean Carroll receives $5.6 million in sexual assault case after years-long legal battle with Trump

E. Jane Carroll finally received $5.6 million after winning her lawsuit against Trump

Author E. Jean Carroll has received more than $5.6 million awarded to her in a civil case against US President Donald Trump, after a federal court released the funds allocated during his appeal of the ruling. The payment includes $5 million awarded by a New York jury in 2023 along with accrued interest. The funds remained in escrow during the appeal process and were released after the U.S. Supreme Court refused to block the jury’s decision.Carroll’s lawyer, Roberta Kaplan, confirmed that the payment had been completed, saying that her client had now received the damages ordered by the court, as reported by the Associated Press. The dispute stems from a 2023 civil trial in which jurors said Trump was responsible for sexually assaulting Carroll in the mid-1990s and later defaming her after she publicly made the allegation. The case was brought under a New York law that temporarily reopened the window for survivors to pursue decades-old sexual assault claims through civil lawsuits.Although the funds have now been released, Trump’s legal team is continuing its efforts to overturn the ruling.

His lawyers had requested an emergency court order to prevent the transfer of funds to Carroll, but the request was rejected. They have since filed another appeal.Trump has repeatedly denied Carroll’s allegations, saying the meeting never happened and calling the lawsuit politically motivated. The president is separately appealing another civil judgment ordering him to pay $83 million in damages to Carroll in a defamation case stemming from comments he made after she publicly accused him for the first time. This appeal is still pending.
