Indian-origin restaurant owner in North Carolina arrested for attempt to murder wife, daughter calls 911

An Indian-origin restaurant owner in North Carolina was arrested for trying to kill his wife.

An Indian-American restaurant owner in North Carolina is facing a charge of attempted murder of his wife after a domestic violence incident was reported to police when their daughter called 911 when 49-year-old Mathivanan Puthiyappan began chasing his wife down the road.

The incident occurred earlier this month, and Puthiappan was charged on April 4 with assault on a female, making threats and domestic violence. Four days later, another case was filed charging Puthiappan with attempted first-degree murder.Pothiyappan is the owner of CholaNad, an Indian restaurant on West Franklin Street that has now closed following his arrest, local reports claimed, and Pothiyappan told CBS17 that the restaurant will reopen soon.

He did not comment on the charges against him.The wife told police that Puthiappan was always verbally and physically abusive. She said on previous occasions that he had hit her with a dumbbell and burned her. On April 4, while they were arguing since morning, Puthiyaappan threw things at her along with a bag full of medicines. Then he went to the kitchen and said: “Today, I will take this knife and kill you.”

Puthiyaappan’s wife ran away from home in the meantime and Puthiyaappan started chasing her in his car. That’s when Puthiappan’s daughter called 911.Pothiyapan was given $5,000 for the initial charges and was released on April 6. After an attempted murder charge was filed, he was arrested again and given a $100,000 bail.Conditions for his release before trial include not contacting his family involved in the incident, and surrendering his passport.CholaNad is a famous South Indian cuisine restaurant in North Carolina. “The name CholaNad is derived from the Great Chola Empire of the Tamils. The Chola were one of the major maritime and colonial empires of the classical world from 320 BC to 1279 AD. The Cholas introduced their culture and of course their food to the countries they traded with and ruled. For example, Thai food and culture were strongly influenced by Tamil cuisine because of the Cholas.”
