“Avengers: Secret Wars” has officially been set to premiere in IMAX on Dec. 17, 2027. The Marvel superhero film, which serves as a follow-up to “Avengers: Doomsday,” will now officially prepare itself for release on big-screen formats, according to an announcement made during an IMAX earnings call.

This move comes after “Doomsday,” scheduled for release in December 2026 on IMAX screens, lost to “Dune: Part Three.” According to reports, the Denis Villeneuve directorial is getting an exclusive IMAX release, including 70mm, in its opening window on December 18, 2026. The deal is said to give Dune exclusive three-week use of all US IMAX screens for the first time, ensuring the format’s premium advantage. Tickets for select 70mm shows sold out quickly.

However, while the film has booked its release date more than a year in advance, it still comes a year after “The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt For Gollum” chose the same date. “Secret Wars,” which is set to be the grand finale of Phase 6 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe – Multiverse Saga, will now clash with “LOTR” next December.The project will be directed by Anthony Russo and Joe Russo, and is expected to feature a large-scale multiverse story inspired by the 2015 Secret Wars comic book arc.
