CSK finally chase 180+ total in IPL after six years as Urvil Patel turns Chepauk into a six-hit offering

Chennai Super Kings (LSG) registered their third successive win in IPL 2026 after defeating Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) by five wickets at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Sunday, with Urvil Patel leading the chase with a 23-ball 65.Urvil’s innings included the fastest combined fifty in IPL history, as he reached the milestone in just 13 balls. It was also the fastest fifty by a CSK batsman and his first half-century in the IPL. With this win, CSK moved to fifth place in the points table, while LSG came close to elimination. It was also the first time since 2019 that CSK managed to achieve a target higher than 180.When asked to bat first, LSG got off to a flying start through Josh Inglis, who smashed 85 off 33 balls as the visitors raced to 91 runs in the powerplay.

However, CSK’s fielders fought back strongly after fielding restrictions, with Jimmy Overton returning figures of 3/36 to help restrict LSG to 203/8.CSK started the chase quickly through Sanju Samson and skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad. But after Digvesh Rathi bowled Samson while trying to play a quicker delivery, Urvil took charge of the game. The young striker attacked from the start and quickly put the pressure back on LSG.

He hit Avesh Khan for three sixes in one over before smashing Rathi for three sixes and a four. One of the biggest moments of the innings came when Orville hit Mohammed Shami to long off to score his seventh to move to 48 off 11 balls. He then reached his fifty in 13 balls, matching Yashasvi Jaiswal’s IPL record from 2023.After arriving at this landmark, Orville took out a scrap of paper from his pocket on which he wrote: “This is for you, father,” as well as some lines written in Gujarati.

The crowd in Chibok responded with loud chants of “Orville! Orville!” While the CSK dugout celebrated the innings.Orville eventually fell for 65 off 23 balls, hitting eight sixes and two fours at a strike rate of 282.61. His innings also helped CSK post 97/1 in the powerplay, the highest powerplay score at Chepauk, surpassing LSG’s 91 earlier in the match.Even after Orville was fired, the game was not over. LSG got back into contention through Shehbaz Ahmed and Rathi, who removed Gaikwad and Dewald Previs.

Kartik Sharma added 20 runs before he was dismissed by Avesh Khan, leaving CSK at 169/5 in the 17th over.As the pressure mounted, Prashant Vir and Shivam Dubey remained calm to end the chase with four balls remaining. Veer remained unbeaten in the 18th over and was dropped twice during his innings by Rathi and Nicholas Pooran. With 10 runs needed in the final over, the ball was handed to Aiden Markram. After bowling two wide, he was hit for six successive overs by Dube as CSK sealed the win and kept their playoff hopes alive.
