TMC MLA Firhad Hakim announced his resignation as Kolkata mayor on Friday as the problems facing the Mamata-led party continue to worsen in the wake of the election fiasco in the recently concluded assembly elections in Bengal.

Announcing his resignation, Hakim said: “I am resigning from the post of mayor of Kolkata because I am unable to work and cannot disrespect the president.”

The Trinamool Congress (TMC) was ousted from power as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won the elections in a landslide with 208 seats after the results were announced last month.

But Mamata’s party is now facing another crisis of rebellion in its legislative ranks after losing power. On Wednesday, Speaker Rathendra Nath Bose recognized 58 TMC legislators, led by MLA Ritabrata Banerjee, as the main opposition bloc. The rebel MLAs accused the party leadership of acting in an autocratic manner.
