Ahead of the proposed march to Parliament today, the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) has made a big claim, saying the government has approached them for the first time amid the massive protest.
HT has learnt that this claim was made by a CJP spokesperson. If true, this would be the first communication by the government amid widespread calls for intervention in the ongoing hunger strike led by climate activist Sonam Wangchuk. Follow live updates on the CJP’s parliamentary march here.
Sonam Wangchuk, who has been on hunger strike since last month, was taken to Safdarjung Hospital by policemen on Saturday, July 18. The CJP-led protest subsequently intensified as founder Abhijit Debaki also began an indefinite fast.
There is no clarity on whether the march will be allowed
The CJP is scheduled to hold a march to Parliament, titled ‘Chalo Sansad’, at 9 am today. However, there is no clarity on whether the protesters have received permission to march.
Delhi Police on Sunday imposed Section 163 of BNSS. In parts of New Delhi, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Sachin Sharma said that “no such permission has been sought or granted for any such protest march/procession”.
However, the TDP was also seen interacting with CJP spokesperson Sourav Das this morning at Jantar Mantar. Hizb ut Tahrir learned that senior police officials had indicated the risk of a law and order situation arising from the protest, as they were assured that the march would not be violent.
The CJP told the police that another call would be made after speaking to Abhijit Debaki.
What was the government’s first reaction to the Wangchuk strike?
The CJP spokesperson’s claim on the government’s outreach comes days after the Center told the Delhi High Court that it was willing to monitor Sonam Wangchuk’s health.
