Chennai Police arrested a Bangladeshi national for allegedly trying to travel on an Indian passport at the airport here, officials said on Sunday.
On the orders of Commissioner Amalraj and on the instructions of Additional Commissioner of Police, Central Crime Branch, a police team from Central Crime Branch and Fake Passport Investigation Unit conducted an intensive investigation at the airport here.
On July 18, a complaint was lodged with the Central Crime Branch of the city police that 33-year-old Muhammad Bujur Ali, a Bangladeshi national, concealed his Bangladeshi nationality, fraudulently obtained an Indian passport under the variant name Muhammad Bazar Ali and tried to travel to Dhaka from Chennai, an official statement said on Sunday.
Investigations revealed that Ali entered India illegally from Bangladesh in 2005 and changed his name to Muhammad Bazaar Ali and his place of birth to Lalgola, West Bengal, and gave his date of birth as January 1, 1994.
“Using these details, he fraudulently obtained Indian documents like Aadhaar, PAN card and voter ID card. Based on these documents, he obtained an Indian passport and often traveled to Bangladesh to visit his family,” the statement said.
“During one of these trips (on July 18), he was arrested at Chennai airport for trying to travel to Bangladesh using an Indian passport,” she added.
A case was booked at the Central Crime Branch in Chennai and after interrogation, Ali was produced before a local court and remanded in jail, the statement added.
