Six workers were killed while three others were injured on Friday after a portion of an under-construction bridge collapsed following a storm over the Betwa River in Uttar Pradesh’s Hamirpur district, officials said.

The accident took place around 3 am near Murakandar Barsani village in Lalpora where a bridge was being constructed connecting the village to my building in Kurara district. Officials said strong winds and rain hit the area late Wednesday evening when a concrete slab of the bridge suddenly collapsed.
Many workers were resting under and around the building to take shelter from the storm when the panel collapsed on them.

Police, district administration officials and State Disaster Response Force teams reached the spot after the incident and began rescue operations.
Three workers were stranded on one of the bridge’s pillars, and efforts were made to bring them to rescue them.
The deceased were identified as Lokendra Nishad, 22, and Kuldeep Nishad, 19, both from Chilla in Banda district. Sawant Yadav, 28, a resident of Bhoragarh; Sabahjit, 30; Pushpendra Singh Chauhan, 34, from Swasa Khurd in Hamirpur; and Rajesh Pal, 42, from Ashpora.
Officials said rescue operations were underway.
