NCP-SP leader Sharad Pawar and Union Minister Ramdas Athawale were among the 19 new members of the Rajya Sabha who took oath here on Monday.

The oath was administered in the presence of Rajya Sabha Chairman C P Radhakrishnan.

Vice President Harivansh and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju were present during the ceremony in the Rajya Sabha chamber.

Leaders of the relevant parties were also present in the House of Representatives.

The new elected members comprise five from Maharashtra, six from Tamil Nadu, five from West Bengal and three from Odisha.

Maya Chintaman Evenette of the BJP’s Maharashtra unit was the first to take the oath, followed by Pawar, who arrived in a wheelchair.

Ramrao Sakharam Wadkot (BJP), Jyoti Nagnath Waghmar (SS) and Athawale (RPI-A) were also sworn in as members representing Maharashtra in the Senate.

Manmohan Samal (BJP), Sanrupt Mishra (BJP) and Dilip Kumar Rai (IN) were sworn in as members from Odisha, while Konstandin Raveendran (DMK), Christopher Manickam (Congress), L K Sudheesh (DMDK), M Thambidurai (AIADMK), Tiruchi Siva (DMK) and Ambumani Ramadoss (PMK) were sworn in as members representing Tamil Nadu Call out.

From West Bengal, Babul Supriya Baral (AITC), Biswajit Sinha (BJP), Menaka Guruswamy (AITC), Rajiv Kumar (AITC) and Rukmini Mallick (AITC) took oath.

Most members took the oath in their regional languages.

President Radhakrishnan congratulated all the new elected members.
