Support is growing for newly commissioned Army Captain Bharat Bhardwaj over the controversy surrounding his recent proposal to his partner at an awards ceremony in Maharashtra – a gesture that received many hearty reactions but also sparked an online debate on military protocol as well as security concerns due to the appearance of an Army helicopter in the background.

Viral videos of the proposal, which took place after the military parade at the Army Combat Aviation Training School near Nashik on Tuesday, showed the newly commissioned pilot dressed in ceremonial attire getting down on one knee on the runway before presenting a ring to his partner. Video clips showed that his partner expressed his acceptance by hugging him.

While many online described the gesture as heart-warming, others raised concerns about discipline and the use of military assets in the images that were widely circulated on social media.

Even as the Army was likely to seek an explanation from the officer over the suggestion’s presence on social media, many now-retired senior Army officers rallied behind the young captain, rejecting suggestions of any serious security breach and criticizing what they described as excessive anger.

Army captain gets support from veterans

Retired Lieutenant General HS Panag said such situations were not uncommon during service and said young officers should not be subjected to unnecessary scrutiny.

“I dealt with many such issues in service. I did my best to protect and preserve the dignity of young, enthusiastic, free-spirited officers and soldiers. I made it a point to check their confidential reports and correct them if the more stringent commanders in the chain of command looked at them differently. At worst, he issued a public dissolution letter without mentioning names or the incident,” the former officer on X said.

Colonel (retired) Sanjay Pandey said the Army should have used this moment positively to reach out to recruitment. “Best Image from Indian Army Series ‘Do You Have It In You?’ Recruitment Campaign Seizing such rare events to strengthen organizations requires vision. Someone has got it wrong,” he said, adding that there was still “time to redeem it”.

“No statements, no posts, just put this poster all over India,” he said, sharing a photo of the couple that sparked mixed reactions.

Former Chief of Integrated Defense Staff Lt. Gen (retd) Satish Dua also criticized the backlash over the viral images and rejected suggestions that the images threaten security.

“There is a lot of toxicity on social media in this photo of the young captain proposing in front of a helicopter. On many occasions, Army equipment is open for public viewing and photography. There is no security breach. This young pilot lives away from family and friends oftentimes. Let him be,” Dua said on X Thursday.

Lt. Gen (retd) Kanwal Jeet Singh Dhillon also strongly defended the officer and criticized what he described as his “nuktachini”. [petty criticism]“A gesture of pure love.”

“You want the young officer to sacrifice his life for the love of the nation, but you don’t want him to express his love for his fiancée. In the army we say ‘young man nahi karega, toh kaun karega’,” Lt. Gen (retd) Dhillon said on the X programme.

“If you can’t find fault with his professional abilities, don’t do this nectarine for such a pure gesture of love and belonging,” he added.

Dillon also argued that Army equipment is routinely displayed in public during outreach exhibitions and public events.

“Students and non-military personnel have taken pictures showing pride and love for the military. So, please do not bring the national security angle into this,” he said.

Later speaking to ANI, the retired officer maintained that the proposal did not amount to any breach of discipline.

“…After the military parade, a young officer, a helicopter pilot, proposed to his girlfriend or fiancée. The photo went viral with different reactions. Some called it a breach of discipline, others called it a security issue, while some felt that soldiers should not do such things…But in my view, if we expect a soldier’s patriotism to be so strong that he is willing to sacrifice his life, why should we question his personal love?” He said.

He added: “If he expresses his love on social media or otherwise, it does not reduce discipline; it just shows a young spirit… I don’t think there is any violation here. It was an honest moment, and it is not worth overreacting. We must accept it with tact.”

“Was the woman’s background checked”: Criticism

Criticisms of this proposal ranged from military discipline to security protocol, with some even questioning whether the woman’s background had been verified. “Has the woman’s identity and background been verified through the necessary security procedures? Was prior approval obtained from the relevant military authorities for such an act during a military parade?” An X user by the name of Neeraj Ranjan, who described himself as a “proud veteran” of bii, said in a post.

“If this relationship is formal and accepted within the system, discussions should also include mandatory military procedures such as declaration of marriage, notarization of marriage certificate, issuance of dependents card, Part II orders and other administrative requirements associated with the recognition of a spouse within the armed forces. Ultimately, it is these formal processes that officially make a person part of the military family,” he said.

Another user, requesting that his views not be taken negatively, said he was more concerned with maintaining the highest standards of military discipline than with the officer’s patriotism or professionalism.

“My concern is not about the officer’s patriotism, character, or professionalism,” the caption read. “It is only about maintaining the highest standards of military discipline, security awareness, and public perception. If such practices become common, they may ultimately create unintended risks rather than incentives.”

The incident continued to divide opinion online, with some social media users asserting that members of the armed forces should adhere to stricter standards of public conduct, while others said the criticism was disproportionate to what they saw as an emotional, personal moment of a soldier willing to sacrifice his life for the nation.
