Monsoon intensifies across northern and northeastern India; IMD warns of heavy rain

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast active southwest monsoon rains over northwest, central and eastern India, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall, risk of flash floods in vulnerable areas, and a significant drop in temperatures in Delhi after a hot and humid weekend.

Heavy to very heavy rains are expected over Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Uttarakhand and several northeastern states in the coming days. In the national capital, maximum temperatures are expected to drop sharply from around 40 degrees Celsius on Sunday to nearly 30 degrees Celsius by Tuesday as monsoon activity intensifies.

Delhi is likely to witness scattered thunderstorms and heavy rain from Monday to Wednesday, bringing daytime temperatures into the low 30s.

According to IMD, Delhi is expected to record maximum temperatures of 40°C on Sunday, 37°C on Monday, 30°C on Tuesday, 33°C on Wednesday, 35°C on Thursday, 36°C on Friday and 32°C on Saturday.

On Sunday, the national capital is expected to witness scattered rain, accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and strong surface winds with speeds ranging between 20 and 30 kilometers per hour.

In the National Capital Region, Ghaziabad is expected to record a minimum temperature of 34 degrees Celsius and a maximum of 39 degrees Celsius, while Gurugram is likely to witness a minimum of 34 degrees Celsius and a maximum of 40 degrees Celsius. Faridabad is expected to remain relatively cooler, with temperatures ranging between 29°C and 32°C.

The IMD has forecast widespread rainfall across the Northeast over the week, with heavy rain likely over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura.

In northwest India, heavy to very heavy rains are expected over Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Rajasthan and Uttrakhand, with very heavy rains falling over parts of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, increasing the risk of flash floods and landslides.

Widespread rainfall is likely across central India in Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Vidarbha.

Eastern India is also expected to remain under the influence of an active monsoon, with very heavy rains forecast over West Bengal and Sikkim, while Bihar, Odisha and Jharkhand are likely to receive heavy to very heavy rains.

In western India, Konkan and Goa are expected to witness widespread rainfall, while Gujarat and several parts of Maharashtra are likely to receive scattered rain.

South India is also set to remain under an active monsoon spell, with widespread rainfall likely over Karnataka, Kerala, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds in several regions.
