Import and supply of LPG in India has been disrupted
India imports about 60 percent of its liquefied petroleum gas needs, and about 90 percent of those supplies pass through the Strait of Hormuz, the Indian government said on Wednesday, while outlining steps taken to address potential supply disruptions amid conflict in West Asia.
An order issued on March 8 directs refineries to maximize LPG production, Sujata Sharma, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, said at a press conference, urging the public not to panic.
What is the impact on India?
Restaurants in Mumbai, Bangalore and Gurugram have started reducing the use of LPG by offering limited or ‘crunch’ menus with quick-cooking dishes and increasing reliance on coal-based tandoor items to avoid potential closures.
In south Delhi, restaurateur Gagandeep Singh Sapra said he had to close his north Indian restaurant Tadka Rani after supplies of liquefied petroleum gas ran out, claiming black market traders were demanding… $5000 per cylinder, which is much higher than the official amount $1,884.50 price for a 19 kg commercial cylinder.
In Bhopal, the shortage is affecting hotels, restaurants and residents, with long queues reported at gas agencies, while some restaurants have switched to induction cooking and a few have closed temporarily.

LPG Shortage Live: The government is working to stabilize LPG supplies amid Hormuz tensions
LPG Shortage Live: Union Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas Suresh Gopi on Thursday said efforts are underway to stabilize the LPG supply situation, adding that new ways are emerging for India to secure additional fuel supplies.
Speaking to reporters, Gopi said Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri took up questions on the LPG crisis in Parliament on Wednesday.
He pointed out that some details regarding fuel supplies through the Strait of Hormuz could not be revealed due to diplomatic sensitivities.
