The AIIMS Medical Board, which conducted a court-ordered second autopsy in Twisha Sharma’s death, has submitted the final forensic opinion to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in a sealed cover, marking a major development in the investigation.

The report, which was submitted on July 10 in compliance with the directions of the Madhya Pradesh High Court, addresses a major forensic dispute over the garter material allegedly used in hanging, including a gymnastic belt with a metal ring, news agency ANI reported.

Major forensic case

The central question before the medical panel was whether the grommet gymnastic belt was the actual ligament used for suspension and whether it matched the injuries found on Twisha Sharma’s neck.

The first autopsy could not determine this because the alleged ligament material was not presented before the medical board during the autopsy. Later, the Madhya Pradesh High Court ordered a second autopsy to be conducted by the medical council at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in Delhi.

Laboratory and histological tests confirmed the presence of skin tissue on the ligament material, proving that it matched the injury pattern.

However, the council’s final conclusions remain confidential as the report was submitted to the CBI in a sealed cover as per the court’s directions, the news agency reported.

In its May 22 order in Writ Petition No. 19119/2026, the Madhya Pradesh High Court at Jabalpur had directed the formation of a medical board to conduct a second autopsy in the case.

According to the order, the director of AIIMS New Delhi has constituted a five-member medical council comprising doctors from the forensic medicine department. The board conducted a second autopsy on May 24 and also visited the crime scene.

The Supreme Court ordered that the report be submitted to the investigating body in a sealed envelope. Accordingly, the AIIMS board handed over its 11-page medical opinion to the CBI on July 10 and informed the Registrar General of the Madhya Pradesh High Court.

AIIMS’s ‘absolutely clear’ opinion.

Refusing to disclose the findings in view of the Supreme Court’s directions and subsequent orders, Dr Sudhir Gupta, head of the forensic medicine department at AIIMS, said the board had conducted a detailed scientific examination before arriving at its conclusions.

“The Medical Council deliberated very meticulously on the issue from all possible angles, took into account all available national and international journals for about a month and gave a detailed opinion with scientific justifications. It is a completely clear opinion for the CBI and the judiciary in favor of truth and justice,” Dr Gupta said.

He declined to provide further details, saying the report was submitted to the CBI in a sealed cover as directed by the court.

As per the direction letter, the sealed report has been handed over to the investigating officer of the CBI, while the second post-mortem video remains with the investigating agency.

Twisha Sharma, daughter-in-law of retired judge and sessions judge Giribala Singh, was found hanging at her marital home in Bhopal earlier this year.
