The hostel complex of BJ Medical College, which was badly damaged in the Indian Airlines plane crash last year, will be rebuilt as an ultra-modern facility at a cost $Gujarat Health Minister Praful Pancheria on Tuesday announced Rs 105 crore.

On June 12 last year, Air India flight AI-171 bound for London crashed into the Inn Medical Complex in Ahmedabad’s Meghanagar area moments after taking off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. The disaster claimed the lives of 241 people on board and 19 people on the ground. Only one passenger survived.
Pancheria said that the Ministry of Health requested compensation from the Tata Group, which responded positively and agreed to liquidate the entire amount soon.
“To ensure that student accommodation facilities are not disrupted, the state government, under the direction of Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, has decided to build the new hostel on priority basis,” he added.
The new G+8 structure, proposed as an ‘Atolyam 1 to 7’ complex, will accommodate 236 doctors, including an additional 144 seats planned over the next three years. It will contain studio apartments, a highly specialized hostel building, a modern canteen, a substation, basement parking, a gymnasium, and separate areas for single students.
Budget allocations $Rs 34.65 lakh crore has already been allocated for FY 2026-27 against an estimated initial allocation of $51.84 crores, and the land is allocated for construction.
Meanwhile, the official investigation into the plane crash is nearing its end. Union Civil Aviation Minister Rammohan Naidu Kinjarapu said on May 8 that the final investigation report is likely to be released within a month.
