The incident took place at Byadarahalli police limits in Bengaluru on Tuesday. The deceased was identified as 27-year-old Kiran, who was in a relationship with accused Prerana. They were both colleagues in a telecommunications company.

According to police, Prerana called Kiran to her home in Anjanapura on Tuesday morning when she was alone. After speaking with Kiran for some time, she allegedly blindfolded him and tied his hands and legs to a chair, HT had earlier reported. Under the pretext of a “foreign-style show,” she allegedly killed him by setting him on fire.

But what is the reason behind the murder?

While the couple was in a relationship for about a year, tensions escalated recently after Prerna alleged that Kiran was ignoring her, police officials said. She was also upset by Kiran’s refusal to marry her.

In her initial statement, Prerna claimed that she was in the bathroom when she heard a noise and later found Kiran on fire. She told police: “Kieran set himself on fire.”

However, during the police investigation, it is found that Kiran did not bring any fuel with him, proving Prerana’s statement false.

Police cited “anger at neglect in the relationship” as the reason for the killing in preliminary findings and added that the accused woman had been detained.

Police suggest premeditated murder

Police officials also pointed out the possibility that Prerana had intended to kill and even arranged the petrol in advance. “There is strong suspicion that the accused had arranged the petrol in advance,” police said.

How did that happen?

According to investigators, Prerana called Kiran on Tuesday morning when her mother and brother were not at home. After speaking for some time, she allegedly blindfolded him and tied his hands and feet to a chair.

DCP DL Nagesh said that when Kiran questioned why she was restricting him so tightly, Prerana told him: “This is a foreign-style suggestion, just stay calm,” citing details from the preliminary investigation.

Meanwhile, Kiran remained sitting and waiting for the surprise, as the accused indicated. She then poured petrol on him and set him on fire, resulting in Kiran’s instant death.
