The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has come up with an ambitious plan to ease traffic congestion in south Delhi, proposing a network of elevated walkways, redesigned roads, tunnels and subways along the severely congested Mehrauli-Badarpur (MB) Road corridor.

The project aims to ease the daily congestion faced by commuters traveling through Sangam Vihar, Saket, Khanpur, Pul Prahladpur and Badarpur, areas that have witnessed increasing traffic pressures due to density of residential settlements, roadside parking and increasing numbers of vehicles.

According to officials, the proposed reform is expected to significantly improve travel between South Delhi and Badarpur borders with integration with existing metro lines and flyovers in the area.

In what ways will communication improve?

The proposal includes an elevated corridor of about 5 km connecting Sangam Vihar to Anandamayi Marg via an extension of MB Road. Another 1.1 km long elevated section has been planned from Pul Prahladpur towards Badarpur to streamline traffic near the border areas.

The elevated road from Saket G-Block to Sangam Vihar is also part of the project. Additionally, a 1.9 km stretch between Maa Anandmayee Marg and Pul Prahladpur will be redesigned to improve traffic and pedestrian movement.

The alignment will connect major intersections and residential clusters including Saket G Block, Ambedkar Nagar, Khanpur and Pul Prahladpur, officials said. The second phase also proposes a 2.48 km long, six-lane elevated flyover over the Delhi Metro underpass corridor.

Estimated cost of the project

The consulting work for preparing the detailed project report (DPR) and conducting feasibility studies was estimated at approximately $1.47 Crores. The broader infrastructure project – including elevated roads, bridges, tunnels and redesigned road extensions – is expected to cost approximately $1,471 Crores.

Timeline for completion

The DPR exercise and feasibility study for the proposed traffic revamp are expected to be completed within four months, officials said. The timetable for implementing and building the larger project has not yet been finalized.
