A rape survivor’s desperate cry for justice spilled onto the streets outside the Gurugram Police Commissioner’s office on Thursday, when she allegedly tried to end her life by setting herself on fire, alleging police inaction on her case for months.

The woman, carrying a bottle of gasoline and a box of matches, reached the gate of the Communist Party office and doused herself with gasoline. The deployed policemen moved immediately and prevented her from setting herself on fire, while they tried to calm her down.

The moments leading up to the incident were captured in video clips, which are now circulating on social media. Although the images are blurry, her screams can be clearly heard.

In another video recorded by the woman before entering the Communist Party office, she said that she was raped by a man from Panipat and that she had lodged an FIR with the Sector 51 police station. However, even after four months, the accused has not been arrested.

She said in the video: “The accused is still roaming freely. His family and followers are threatening me and my family to withdraw the case. Now death is the only way out. I will go to the Communist Party office to commit suicide.”

While there was no immediate comment from the police in this matter and it was not possible to contact Police Commissioner Vikas Kumar Arora. Later, in an official statement, Gurugram Police neither confirmed nor denied the incident, but said that the accused in the case will be arrested soon.
