The RJD march, which was proposed on the first day of Parliament’s monsoon session, has yet to get the green light from Delhi Police, which has refused permission and imposed prohibitory orders in most parts of New Delhi.
Meanwhile, activist Sonam Wangchuk, who has been on an indefinite hunger strike for more than 20 days, has set conditions for ending the fast. Waghchuk urged the Center to accept responsibility for the recent failures in the education system or for MPs to assure him that the issue would be raised in Parliament. On Saturday last week, Wangchuk was forcibly taken from Jantar Mantar by Delhi Police and admitted to Safdarjung Hospital. The activist claimed that he was being held under “unlawful detention” in the hospital.
Security measures imposed at Jantar Mantar, Section 163
Tight security measures were deployed at the protest site, with barricades installed at the back side (Kerala House) to block one of the roads leading to the protest site. Barricades have been placed on Tolstoy Marg – one of the main entry points to the site – with a small entrance left for people to enter as of now. Police personnel maintained vigilance, and a riot control vehicle was seen entering the site.
Meanwhile, Delhi Police imposed prohibitory orders under Section 163 of BNSS. Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Sachin Sharma issued a public warning on the
Wangchuk’s terms from Sonam quickly expire
In a handwritten note from Safdarjung Hospital, activist Wangchuk set out three conditions under which his fast could be cancelled. “Dear friends and supporters, many of you have asked when I will end quickly. As we previously mentioned to supporters, I will end my fast on July 20, if…” Wangchuk wrote. He said he would end the fast if “the government takes responsibility for the recent failures in the education system – paper leaks, etc.” or “if the AKP leadership reaches the doorstep of Parliament as the esteemed MPs and leaders of various parties have assured us that the issue will now be raised in Parliament.” He said that if his health condition does not allow for this, the representatives can visit the hospital and give the above-mentioned assurances.
