New Delhi – Spanish substitute Ferran Torres etched his name in the history of the FIFA World Cup after scoring the winning goal in the 106th minute of the 2026 World Cup final against Argentina at New York Stadium on Sunday. With this goal, Torres became only the second substitute to score the winning goal in a World Cup final, equaling German Mario Götze, who also achieved this feat against Argentina in the 2014 final.
Torres came on as a substitute in the 62nd minute and had the decisive impact as Spain beat defending champions Argentina 1-0 after extra time to win their second FIFA World Cup title. Spain’s first World Cup win came in 2010.
Spain dominates but struggles to make a breakthrough
Spain dominated the final for long periods, possessing the ball and creating many chances. They continued to press forward, while Argentina, led by Lionel Messi, defended deeply and was able to take the match to extra time despite being subjected to constant pressure.By the time extra time began, Spain had already created more chances but were unable to overcome Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez.
Torres scores the title-winning goal
The breakthrough finally came in the 106th minute. Neco Williams kept a long cross alive by heading the ball into the middle of the box, where Torres was quickest to react.
The Spanish striker fired a shot with his left foot that flew under the crossbar and into the net, giving Martinez no chance.It was Spain’s 20th shot of the match and Torres’ first goal of the tournament. His goal proved enough to secure a famous 1-0 victory and crown Spain with its second World Cup.Spain held on comfortably to end Argentina’s reign as world champions and lift football’s biggest trophy for a second time.
