The problem reached a Hyderabad-based policeman who was suspended after he allowed his granddaughter, a minor, to drive a car on a busy road in the city on Sunday. After being alerted to the incident, immediate action was taken against the accused, including filing criminal charges against him.

The incident sparked public anger not only because of the apparent negligence in performing the policeman’s duties, but also because of his refusal to admit his mistake.

Hyderabad policeman suspended from duty

The accident, which occurred on the Gandhamguda-Bairajiguda road, led to traffic congestion and raised serious safety concerns on the road, with the policeman, identified as Pujari Thirupathi, allowing his visibly young granddaughter to take the wheel.

As people raised the alarm over the incident and confronted the policeman, he continued to defend his decision instead of acknowledging the serious consequences of his actions, news agency ANI reported.

A case has now been registered in this regard by the Cyberabad Traffic Police.

“Regarding the reported issue, a case has been registered under Section 125 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Sections 184 and 180 of the Motor Vehicles Act against Pujari Thirupathi for allowing a minor to drive a vehicle within the limits of Narsingi Police Station,” the police station wrote in a post on X.

“Further investigation is underway.”

Due to the sensitive nature of the case, it attracted strong public interest and urgent police action.

Telangana Director General of Police (DGP) CV Anand also reacted to the incident and announced strong action against the accused cop.

“The DGP has requested CP Cyberabad to suspend the concerned officer and initiate an administrative inquiry into the reckless act,” he wrote on his social media in response to the Cyberabad Traffic Police’s comments.
