'There can be normal human beings in Pakistan': AR Rahman reacts to 'anti-national' controversy surrounding Imtiaz Ali's 'Main Vaapas Aaunga'

AR Rahman has responded to the online controversy surrounding Imtiaz Ali’s song ‘Main Vaapas Aaunga’, which some social media users have described as ‘anti-national’. The composer shared a sarcastic post on Instagram poking fun at the criticism and added a laughing emoji. The film marks Rahman and Ali’s fifth collaboration together.

Imtiaz Ali’s recent film ‘Main Vaapas Aaunga’ has been garnering praise from critics and moviegoers ever since its release. While the Partition-based drama continues to benefit from positive word of mouth, it has also become the subject of controversy online, with some social media users describing it as “anti-national”.

Amid the ongoing controversy, Oscar-winning music composer AR Rahman shared his reaction in a subtle yet notable way.

Abdulrahman He shares a sarcastic post on Instagram

Taking to Instagram, Rahman reposted a screenshot of a satirical post that addressed the backlash surrounding ‘Main Vaapas Aaunga’. The post appeared to criticize critics who questioned the film’s depiction of Pakistan, noting that it did not rely on stereotypes often associated with mainstream films.

Its headline read, “An anti-national film? Dare to show Pakistan without terrorists and secret agents.”The caption also says: “The man who was excited to watch an Indian spy take revenge on Pakistan, and who at the end of the film said ‘Mein Vaapas Aaunga’, was disappointed that the film had nothing to do with terrorists and spies. Although he was moved by the sincere drama, he was confused as to how Pakistan could not have terrorists or spies, since that’s all they seem to have in other films.”

He later stated in an interview that this was something completely new, and moved away from the view that there could be normal human beings in Pakistan.

AR Rahman responds with a laughing emoji

Instead of sharing a detailed answer, Rahman chose a more nuanced approach. He reposted the screenshot on his Instagram Story and accompanied it with a laughing emoji, seemingly ignoring the criticism and dismissing suggestions that ‘Main Vaapas Aaunga’ carries an ‘anti-national’ message.

‘Main Vaapas Aaunga’ marks the fifth collaboration between AR Rahman and Imtiaz Ali

‘Main Vaapas Aaunga’ brings together AR Rahman and Imtiaz Ali for the fifth time. Over the years, the director-composer duo has collaborated on numerous acclaimed projects, including ‘Rockstar’, ‘Highway’, ‘Tamasha’ and ‘Amar Singh Chamkila’, creating some of the most iconic music and storytelling combinations in contemporary Hindi cinema.
