Christopher Nolan’s journey at the box office with Odyssey It looks to be one for the books, as Universal Pictures’ star-studded adaptation of the classic Greek mythological tale gets off to a thrilling start on its opening weekend.
The epic film, starring Matt Damon as the heroic Odysseus, beats out the competition with $51.2 million on Friday from 3,900 screens in North America, including Thursday previews. Earning an award-winning CinemaScore from audiences, the film is looking to frame more than $120 million, making it the biggest live-action opening of 2026, with only… Toy Story 5 ($159 million) and Super Mario Galaxy movie ($131 million) debuted above it. Odyssey It is also set to have the highest R-rated opening of the year and Universal’s highest opening weekend ever for an R-rated film.
Globally, Odyssey It looks to be headed toward $257.8 million for the summer weekend, with $137.3 million coming from 73 international markets.
This marks a stronger start than initially expected for the film, which had a production budget of $250 million, as the studio was targeting a domestic opening in the $80 million to $100 million range.
