Director Sheeran has another feather in his cap now as he has been elected as the new president of the South Indian Film Writers Association. The director won the elections held by the association in Chennai and secured the confidence of majority of the voting members.
His victory heralds a new beginning for the Writers’ Association, which elected a new group of bureau members to head the association for the next period.
Sheeran defeats VC johannathan With a strong voting margin
The elections, which were held at the Cine Musicians Association hall in Vadapalani, saw voting from 8 am to 4 pm. According to The Hindu, Sheeran, representing the ‘Namma K. Bhagyaraj Committee’, defeated VC Guhanathan of the ‘Thiraikkathai Mannan K. Bhagyaraj Committee’ in the race for the chairman’s post.
Sheeran received 279 votes out of 432, and Johannathan received 155 votes. The win confirmed Sheeran as the new president of the South Indian Film Writers’ Association by a convincing margin.
The elections witness healthy participation and a team sweep
The elections witnessed enthusiastic participation from members of the association who came out in large numbers to exercise their electoral right. In addition to the position of President, elections were held for 21 positions, including Vice-Presidents, Secretary-General, Treasurer and Joint Secretaries.
The Cheran Committee had a successful journey with Samuthirakani and Snekan also elected as Vice-Chairmen. There was a brief dispute over the voting rights of ineligible members before the poll, but the electoral process ended peacefully before the votes were counted later in the evening.
Sheeran continues to balance film and leadership responsibilities
This win is expected to lead Sheeran to play a greater role in addressing the concerns of screenwriters and strengthening the association in the coming years. Besides his directorial work, the National Award-winning director remains active in Tamil cinema. Sheeran is known for his ability to tell an emotionally charged story through films like ‘Autograph’, ‘Thavamai Thavamirundhu’ and ‘Pokkisham’.Over the years, Cheran has collaborated with actors including Sneha, Mallika, Parthiban, Padmapriya and Saranya Ponvannan and technicians/musicians including Bharadwaj, Sabesh Murali, Ilaiyaraaja and others.
