For the past five years, Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mack have owned Welsh football club Wrexham AFC, and their exploits have been chronicled in the FX series. Welcome to Wrexham.
The club has achieved a remarkable turnaround since then, gaining promotions in the league, bringing in top-flight sponsors, and making the entertainment giants the toast of the city (population about 45,000). It also provided a global fan base to what was previously a small regional football team.
But there is one thing the duo have yet to do with the club: call a live match.
Mack and Reynolds will co-host a live broadcast of Wrexham AFC’s match against Swansea City on 13 March, live from STōK Cae Ras (the raceground where Wrexham hosts its matches). Private, called Live from Wrexham with Rob and Ryanwill feature unscripted analysis of the match and real-time reactions from Mac and Reynolds alongside Sky Sports presenter David Prutton.
The special will air in the US on Paramount+ and on Sky Sports in the UK
“As with our decision to take over Wrexham five years ago, we really have no idea how this will go, but we will do our best,” McReynolds said in a statement. “None of us have ever named a sporting event of any kind, let alone a sport whose rules we essentially learned five years ago. Either way, it will be another unpredictable day at the racetrack and we can’t wait. We are grateful to our partners at the EFL and Sky Sports, the latter of which we hope will be ready to press the buzzer.”
Michael Williamson, Wrexham chief executive, added: “From the beginning of Rob and Ryan’s ownership, we have strived as a club to do things differently.” “The first ever Live from Wrexham with Rob and Ryan“In collaboration with Sky Sports and the EFL, we continue this theme and provide Wrexham fans around the world another unique way to follow our match with Swansea in a world where sport and entertainment collide.”
