Tamil cinema’s superstar Thalapathy Vijay starrer Jana Nayagan, whose release continues to be stalled till date, has been under debate for quite some time.
A big star of Tamil cinema Thalapathy Vijay’s Although Jana Nayagan has been in discussion for a long time, its release has been stalled till now. The film was slated to release in January 2026 for the Pongal festival, but got delayed due to non-clearance of the censor certificate. The Central Board of Film Censors (CBFC) has now clarified that they will not release any information related to the film’s certification. Due to this delay, theater owners in Tamil Nadu are facing huge losses, estimated to be around Rs 100 crore.
Why did the CBFC refuse to disclose the certificate details?
CBFC’s Chennai Zonal Officer D. Balamurali said that the entire process of getting the certificate is confidential and no information can be shared as per law. He said that no comment can be made until the film is certified. According to a report in The Hindu daily, “Our selection process is all confidential. We cannot disclose anything till the certificate is issued. The law prohibits sharing such information,” adding that the details would be made public once the final decision is taken.

A legal dispute is going on in this regard. The Madras High Court quashed the single judge’s order allowing the release of the film. The case was then sent back for trial. It is said that there were complaints within the board regarding the film’s story and some important topics, and because of this, the CBFC had to review the certification process. This legal battle has made the film’s release even more uncertain.

Due to the delay of the film, theater owners have suffered the biggest loss. Pongal is considered to be the most profitable season for Tamil cinema. According to business experts, Jana Nayagan may have earned Rs 150 to Rs 200 crore in Tamil Nadu during this period. But due to non-availability of film, many theater screens were left empty and even small budget films could not attract the audience. It has taken the entire film industry by storm.

No release date of the film has been announced yet. The film’s fans, producers and theater owners are eagerly waiting for a resolution to this controversy. The film will remain in drag until the CBFC takes a final decision.
