John Mayer talks about 20-year-old song called 'Waiting to Change the World': 'A lot of people thought it was negative'

John Mayer, the Grammy Award-winning musician, is widely known for his powerful voice and powerful stage presence. He is also remembered for some of his most famous songs, including the controversial “Waiting for the World to Change.”

Nearly 20 years after its release, Mayer recently addressed the controversy surrounding the song and how it was once labeled “negative.”

John Mayer reflects on ‘waiting for the world to change’

The musician recently performed some of his biggest hits at HISTORYTalks in Philadelphia earlier this month. According to People, while interacting with fans, one attendee asked to perform “Waiting for the World to Change.”While Mayer sang part of the song, he also thought about how it was received when it was first released in 2006.

He noted that the song sparked criticism at the time, with many describing it as overly “negative.”“It’s a good, sound and responsible idea,” he said. “A lot of people thought it was negative. It was very negative.” He explained that the song embodies a sense of helplessness and the feeling that his generation often has nowhere to turn for support.Expanding on this idea, Mayer noted that people deal with challenges and trauma in different ways. He explained this with an analogy: “If your car broke down, or let’s say, your car was locked, and someone walked up to you and said: ‘Why can’t you get into your car? What are you doing now? “And [you reply]”, “I’m waiting for AAA.”He added with a touch of humor that even after nearly two decades, “AAA still hasn’t come around,” suggesting that the help people are looking for still isn’t always readily available.
