The new film by South Korean director Hong Sang-soo, No place to put my eyesIt has been sold to the Cinema Guild for North American distribution ahead of its world premiere in international competition of the 79th Locarno Film Festival in Switzerland next month.
No place to put my eyes It follows Sangi (Kim Minhee) who, along with her brother, visits her mother who has settled on Jeju Island. It has been 10 years since she has seen her mother. “Her stepfather, a documentary filmmaker, is making a film about Grass Cemetery, while her mother’s restaurant is a huge success and she makes a lot of money,” the film’s synopsis reads. “She also meets her stepdaughter, who has just started drawing. Sangi works for a snack import company, and in her spare time she makes very short films herself. She spends two days with these people, where previously unknown facts, needless advice, and cheap compliments are passed back and forth.”
In his 35th film, Hong continues his “poetic expression through polished yet seemingly effortless craftsmanship,” the Cinema Guild said. The film follows Sanghi through awkward conversations and unexpected discoveries that merge into a “bittersweet meditation on the meaning, beauty and complexity of life,” the company said.
No place to put my eyes It reunites Hong with old collaborators Kim Minhee, Kwon Haehyo, Shin Sukho, and Park Miso, while also featuring actor Choi Myunggil for the first time in one of his films.
“We can never run out of things to say about Director Hong as he continues to surprise with every new release,” said Cinema Guild president Peter Kelly. He called No place to put my eyes “A wonderful film worth watching with a captivating performance by Kim Minhee.”
The takeover deal was negotiated by Kelly of Cinema Guild along with Youngjoo Suh of Finecut.
