Reading time: 3 minutes
It’s been more than four months since Rob and Michelle Rayner were found stabbed to death inside their home.
But for Jake Rayner, the grief is almost as deep as it was the day he learned his parents were killed.
Nick Rayner has been arrested for the murder of his parents and is currently awaiting trial. Now, Nick’s older brother, Jake, is breaking his silence on the situation for the first time.

In an article posted on his Substack page, Jake wrote candidly about the experience of learning he lost his parents in a horrific way.
“I was at Union Station to celebrate the life of one of my best friends, Christian Anderson, who passed away in October,” the 34-year-old wrote.
“At that moment, I received a call from my sister Romi telling me that our father had died. Minutes later, she called me to tell me that our mother had also died.”
“The 45-minute Lyft ride from downtown to the West Side was unbearable. My world, as I knew it, had collapsed. I was in a trance. The only thing I could focus on was that I needed to get to my childhood home. I needed to get to my sister. I needed to figure out what the hell had just happened.”

At one point in the article, Jake wrote that “this is my story,” promising that his sister Romy Rayner “will tell her story in her own way and in her own time.”
Jake added that he feels “robbed of a lot of things” by the loss of his parents, noting that the tragedy “breaks my heart and makes me angry at the same time.”
“Nothing can prepare you for what it feels like to instantly lose both parents at the same time,” Jake continued.
“It is too devastating to comprehend. I still wake up every morning and have to convince myself that this is not a dream. This is truly the nightmare of my life.”
He added that he still finds himself thinking about “how scared” his parents were in their final moments, adding that “they were the last person in the world who deserved what happened to them.”
“They should enjoy the rest of their lives in peace while they grow old together,” he wrote.
“Instead, it was taken away from them, from me, and from Romy, and there was nothing we could do about it.”
Jake described his parents’ murders as “horrific” and said every day since then “has been horrific”.
In the end, he refers to Nick by saying that his brother is “at the center” of the tragedy.
“We lost more than half our family that night in the most violent way imaginable,” Jake wrote. “It is almost impossible to treat.”
Jake said he realizes that “people have questions” about Rob and Michelle’s deaths, and promised that “some of those answers will come in time.”
“But some parts of this belong only to our family. Keeping them private is the only way to protect what’s left of something that was taken from us,” he wrote.
