HBO’s newest original documentary should grab your attention by its title alone: On Tuesday, HBO revealed the release date and trailer for the series. Bang My Box: The Robin Byrd Story.
Bang My Boxproduced by Sarah Jessica Parker (Sex and the City) chronicling the life of popular TV show host Robin Byrd, which is publicly accessible in New York City, will premiere on HBO and HBO Max on Tuesday, June 30 at 9pm ET/PT. The 80-minute film about Sex…and the City…is directed and produced by Gillian Gunter and Stephanie Schwam.
Bird’s TV show was full of adult entertainment – she wore a black crochet bikini throughout the race. The title of the doc was borrowed from the musical score performed at the end of each episode of the long-running series that aired from 1977 to 1998.
“Before the Internet and the proliferation of social media influencers, there was Robin Byrd,” the documentary’s synopsis begins. “Robin created, produced, and hosted the late-night call-in show that featured performances and interviews with adult and experimental artists. Each show ended with a bawdy song and dance, transforming her unapologetic show that bears her name into a national platform for sexual positivity and freedom of expression.”
Bang My Box: The Robin Byrd Story It makes its world premiere tonight in Tribeca.
In the documentary, Bird, now approaching 70, “confronts her place in history and faces the decision to hand over the memorabilia of her life to archivists, while also lovingly caring for Shelley, her husband of 50 years.” “With a wealth of archival and intimate interviews, the film reflects on Robin’s career and traces her current life in New York City, as well as on Fire Island where she was a beloved resident for decades.”
The Byrds are all participating, as are Annie Sprinkle, Sandra Bernhard, Porsche Lynn, Heather Hunter, Lou Cass, and even SNL alum Sherri Oteri, who parodied Bird on the comedy series.
Bang My Box: The Robin Byrd Story Produced by Parker’s Pretty Matches Production in association with Laylow Pictures. Greg Scarnesi, Claire Demer, Nancy Abraham, Lisa Heller and Tina Nguyen are executive producers; Alison Benson and Carolyn Waterloo produce.
