Stock Market Holiday: Will NSE and BSE remain closed on the occasion of Bakri Eid this week?

Stock markets are preparing for a short trading week, with the National Stock Exchange and Bahrain Stock Exchange scheduled to remain closed on Thursday, May 28, on the occasion of Bakri Eid.This will be the second trading holiday in May after markets remained closed earlier this month on May 1 on the occasion of Maharashtra Day.The holiday means that the Equity, Equity Derivatives and Securities Lending and Borrowing (SLB) segments of both exchanges will remain closed for the day.

Seven more market holidays remain in 2026

The stock exchanges have a total of 16 holidays scheduled in 2026, of which eight have already been observed. After the closure of Eid al-Bakri, the next stock market holiday will be on June 26 in the month of Muharram. In the second half of the year, trading will also remain suspended on:

  • September 14 for Ganesh Chaturthi
  • October 2 for Gandhi Jayanti
  • October 20 for Dussehra
  • November 10 for Diwali Balipratipada
  • November 24 by Guru Nanak Jayanti
  • December 25 for Christmas

Four major holidays in 2026 fall on weekends and therefore will not result in additional market closures. These celebrations include Independence Day on August 15 and Diwali Lakshmi Pujan on November 8.Even though Diwali Lakshmi Pujan falls on a Sunday this year, stock exchanges are expected to conduct their usual trading session on November 8.The exact timing of the one-hour special trading session will be announced closer to the date.

MCX will reopen for the evening session

India’s largest commodity exchange, the Multi Commodity Exchange of India (MCX), will remain closed during the morning session on May 28 but will resume trading in the evening session.MCX has announced 16 trading holidays for 2026 that include partial or complete closures.Meanwhile, the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange Limited (NCDEX) will remain closed for both trading sessions on Thursday.
