Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday inaugurated two new metro corridors, making Delhi home to India’s first fully operational circular metro. Alongside this, the Prime Minister also unveiled other major infrastructure projects, representing a major boost to the city’s public transport and housing networks.
The total investment in these projects is around Rs 33,500 crore, including Delhi Metro expansion worth Rs 18,300 crore.Prime Minister Rekha Gupta highlighted the broader benefits, saying the metro expansion “is expected to make daily commute smoother, reduce traffic congestion and help tackle pollution in the capital”. The projects will also improve accessibility for residents of the National Capital Region, especially those traveling from Noida and Faridabad, and provide better connectivity to the Indira Gandhi International Airport, she added.
India’s first circular metro
The highlight was the opening of the Majlis Park – Maujpur – Babarpur extension of the Pink Line, a 12.3 km long corridor comprising eight elevated stations. With this addition, the Pink Line now extends to 71.56 kilometres, making Delhi the first city in India to have a fully operational circular metro. Stops on this route include:
- Council Garden
- Burari
- Garuda Majra
- Jagatpur and Wazirabad
- Sorgat
- Nanaksar-Sonia Vihar
- Khajouri special
- Bhajanpura
- Yamuna Vihar
- Mujpur Babarpur

Besides the Pink Line, the Dipali Chowk-Majlis Park section of the Magenta Line, which runs for 9.9 km, was also opened.
The new corridors will improve connectivity between northeast and northwest Delhi, reduce travel time across several parts of the city, and benefit areas including Burari, Jagatpur, Zirabad, Khajuri Khas, Bhajanpura, Yamuna Vihar, Madhuban Chowk, Hyderpur Badli More, Bhalaswa and Majlis Park, officials said. In addition to the inaugurated stretches, Prime Minister Modi also laid the foundation stone for three new corridors under the VA phase of Delhi Metro, covering a total length of 16.10 km.
Before the main ceremony, PM Modi also visited the GPRA Type-5 headquarters in Sarojini Nagar to hand over the keys to the women allottees. He also inaugurated and laid foundation stones for projects under GPRA Redevelopment Scheme, worth Rs 15,200 crore.
The redevelopment, taking place in Sarojini Nagar, Netaji Nagar, Kasturba Nagar and Srinuaspuri, will modernize government housing and offices, provide over 9,350 flats for government employees and create 48,000 sq ft of office space. The project is being implemented through a self-sufficiency model, where part of the area is converted into funds to finance the overall redevelopment.
