A new international study suggests that the gradual increase in ocean rise has radically changed the number of times exceptional sea level rise occurs, making devastating coastal floods more frequent than they were a century ago.

The results point to a long-term shift rather than a series of isolated weather events, suggesting that even ordinary tides and storms can now produce effects that previously required far more extraordinary conditions. According to research published in Nature titled “Human-induced sea level rise has quadrupled the frequency of extreme sea level events since 1900,” the impact of human-induced sea level rise is now evident across much of the global coastline, reshaping flood risk in ways that can already be measured through historical observations.

The study found that severe coastal flooding occurs more often

The study examined more than a century of sea level observations collected from tide gauges around the world and combined those records with climate model simulations to understand what has changed over time. Rather than focusing solely on the amount of sea level rise, the researchers investigated how often extreme coastal water levels occur now compared to the past.According to the study, the typical frequency of what was historically considered a once-in-100-year coastal sea level event has increased dramatically on a global scale.

The analysis also suggests that human-induced sea level rise has itself made these extreme events several times more likely than they were at the beginning of the 20th century.

Why do rising sea levels worsen coastal flooding?

Coastal flooding is affected by many factors, including tides, storm surge, seasonal weather patterns, and local geography. While these factors remain important, research suggests that their effects are increasingly magnified by sea level rise at the baseline. According to the authors, human-induced global warming has become the primary force behind the long-term rise in relative sea level since the 1960s. As oceans expand as temperatures rise and additional water enters the sea from melting land ice, the starting point of each storm tide becomes slightly higher. This means that weather events that may previously have remained below the flood threshold are now more capable of pushing water into the ground.

Why do some coasts face greater flood risk than others?

The researchers found that natural climate variability still affects how flood risk changes from one coastline to another. Regional weather patterns, ocean circulation and land motion continue to influence local conditions, meaning some places experience greater changes than others.However, the study concluded that these natural changes are now minor across much of the world’s coastlines when compared to the impact of sea level rise due to human activity.

Rather than creating an entirely new type of flood, rising sea levels increase the chances that familiar coastal processes will reach often devastating levels.
