Rows of identical Disney-style castles rise from the hills near the Turkish town of Mudurnu, creating a scene that looks more like a fantasy movie than an actual housing development.
The ambitious project, known as Al Babas Tower, is designed to serve as a luxury village for wealthy international buyers, especially from the Middle East. Some 587 palace-inspired villas have been partially built as part of a development expected to include more than 700 homes and upscale amenities. The project, worth about $200 million, came to an abrupt halt in 2018 after its developer ran into financial problems, leaving behind one of the most bizarre abandoned real estate projects in the world.
How the $200 million Castle Village became a ghost town
Construction on Al Babas Tower began in 2014 under the supervision of Turkish development company Sarut Group. The company planned to build 732 European-inspired villas, each featuring ornate towers, balconies and ornate facades reminiscent of French palaces. The homes ranged in price from $370,000 to $530,000, and were marketed primarily as vacation homes for wealthy buyers from Gulf countries. The masterplan also includes shopping areas, restaurants, Turkish baths, spas, sports facilities and recreational spaces, with the aim of creating an exclusive luxury community and not just another residential property.

In 2018, work ground to a halt across the site, and the company filed for bankruptcy protection, leaving hundreds of partially completed villas without buyers or residents.
