An Indian-origin woman from California was involved in a horrific accident during her birthday trip to Mexico earlier this month.
Nina Bakhshi, an Indian-origin makeup artist from California, had a harrowing Christmas trip this year when she opted for a guided ATV (all-terrain vehicle) tour in Cenote La Noria in Mexico, where she fell from a bridge and suffered several fractures.
At a fundraiser held earlier this month, she shared her harrowing experience and how the park authorities evaded their responsibilities after the tragedy.Bakhshi said that there was no arrangement to extract her from the place where she fell, and she had to be carried for about 30 minutes to the place where they waited for the ambulance, which did not arrive. She was eventually transported by truck and arrived at the hospital an hour later.
Bakhshi had no travel insurance and the park’s local insurance policy did not cover the emergency surgery she needed. She said: “My friends and family immediately came together to save my life, making the most of credit cards, lending money, and helping cover the costs of surgery and hospital treatment which took much longer since it was a weekend. I had emergency spinal surgery 28 hours after the accident. It was the most painful and terrifying experience of my life, but fortunately the doctors were able to save my lower back, and I can now move my legs.” She added that she was still stuck in Mexico when she organized the fundraiser in May. 13.
“With proper treatment, physical therapy and aftercare, I hope to be able to walk normally again. I am so grateful to be alive and forever grateful to everyone who helped me survive those terrifying moments. Unfortunately, my recovery is far from over. I still have untreated fractures in my neck, ongoing medical expenses, physical therapy, follow-up appointments, medications, and a long recovery journey ahead of me.
“At this time, I am unable to walk normally or return to work,” she said as she sought a donation. “Wish me a happy birthday,” she wrote. In an interview with the Daily Mail, Bakhshi said that she fell to the ground at the moment she was about to record the beautiful bridge scene. She told the Daily Mail: “Have you ever dreamed that you were falling while you were asleep and then you woke up and fell? And that’s exactly what happened.”“I was falling and it was the longest and shortest fall of my life. I could feel every second of that fall and then I hit the ground with my lower back.” A vertebra in her neck was still broken on both sides when she spoke to the Daily Mail.
