A childhood spent studying in humble circumstances in Rajasthan has come full circle for a US-based doctor who is now working to reshape education in his native village. Dr. Ashok Jain’s journey takes him from a rural classroom to an international medical career, returning to the same soil with a mission to create lasting change.Dr. Ashok Jain, originally from Dadal village in Jalore district of Rajasthan, began his early education in the same government school which he would later rebuild. Decades ago, the school operated with limited infrastructure, as students often sat on the floor and basic facilities were inadequate to meet needs. Those early experiences stayed with him and shaped his later outlook and decisions. In January 2020, during a visit to his village for a Republic Day function, Dr Jain returned to the same school and found conditions largely unchanged.
The students were still sitting on the floor, as they had been decades ago. “I went to school, and it was sad to see so many children still sitting on the floor like I used to 40 years ago,” he recalls.
During the visit, Komal Kant Sharma, the then principal of the school, pointed out the need to repair the school’s computer lab. After seeing the situation first-hand, Dr. Jain pledged INR 10 lakh to support the work, a move that soon expanded into a much larger vision.
What followed was a shift in scale. talking to TOI“After the programme, I reached home and discussed the idea with my mother and brother. They both told me how one classroom would not do justice to the future of hundreds of students. That’s when I decided that we should build a small school instead,” said Dr Jain.Today, the same land has been converted into a modern school campus developed under the Shree Chatrasanti Charitable Trust, with a total investment of around $7,52,164 (Rs 7 crore).
The facility has a capacity of 1,200 students from grades 1 to 12 and includes upgraded classrooms, improved infrastructure, a playground and a design inspired by the Indian Parliament. The project also includes a skills development center aimed at creating job opportunities in the region.
