NASA’s first lunar mission in decades will launch starting today! Artemis II, which consists of crew members Reed Wiseman, Victor Glover and Christina KochAnd a Canadian Space Agency astronaut jeremy hansen, It will be launched on Wednesday, April 1. As astronomy enthusiasts prepare to watch liftoff, many are wondering where Artemis II will launch from and when they can see it.

It is the first mission for many, as it will be the first woman (Koch), black man (Glover) and Canadian (Hansen) to travel near the moon. However, Koch and Glover downplayed their individual significance in their mission to celebrate themselves as a group.

“It’s not about celebrating one individual,” Koch said during the crew’s final press conference earlier this week. “If there’s anything worth celebrating, it’s that we’re in a time where anyone with a dream has to work just as hard to achieve that dream. If we’re not striving for everyone and by everyone, then we’re not truly answering all of humanity’s call to exploration.”

Glover echoed Koch’s sentiments, saying, “I live in this dichotomy between happiness where a young woman can look at Christina and embody just her passions or interests…and that little brown boys and girls can look at me and say, ‘Hey, he looks like me, and what does he do?’ And that’s great. I love that.”

“But I also hope that we push in the other direction, that one day we won’t have to talk about these beginnings, that this is human history, the story of humanity, not black history, not women’s history,” Glover concluded.

According to NASA, Artemis II should also help us understand how space travel affects the human mind, body, and overall behavior. Research on this mission will also help NASA improve protocols and interventions to protect future astronauts.
