'I don't want Third World rituals': US Rep. Brandon Gill's criticism sparks online outrage

US politician Brandon Gill has once again landed in hot water on social media after he made a statement on a video of Chhath Puja celebrations in Texas being circulated on social media. Speaking to

“I don’t want Third World religious ceremonies taking place on public waterways in my community.” books. Gill also tagged an old video of Chhat Puja celebrations in Denton, Texas, which has been widely circulated on the platform in recent days.

The original post criticized American Indians for “spilling milk directly into the lake,” polluting local waterways, and contaminating aquatic life. “Protect Texas waters,” the letter read.

Social media users were quick to join the diatribe, trolling not only Indian Americans, but also the country and its culture. “Check where the Ganges enters the Bay of Bengal on Google Earth. It is the largest sewer in the world polluting the entire ocean. Why are there such low value people in our nation? They contribute nothing and take everything,” one user wrote. Another added: “There’s a reason I don’t want to spend any time in India or many parts of the Middle East (which I’ve already been to). These people come here and instead of embracing the American way of life they bring their own filthy habits with them, which is frankly disgusting.”

“This is not India. I don’t think my two nieces and their husbands will like any part of this, because they live in Denton. If you want to celebrate your moral or patriotic heritage, go celebrate it in India. This is Texas!” He called one. However, other users pointed out the discrepancy, pointing out that Jill’s wife, Danielle D’Souza, comes from an Indian immigrant background. “I think I see your in-laws in that shot.

One wrote: “What a hypocrite.” Another added: “Hey buddy, your wife was probably down there pouring milk into Lake Lewisville herself.” “Brandon, you’re going to piss off your in-laws,” one user claimed. One added: “I live in that lake. I’ve seen people vomiting and urinating in the lake. It won’t pollute anything.”The videos, dating back to the Hindu festival celebrations in October 2025, have resurfaced on social media platforms due to widespread anti-Hindu rhetoric in the US. This underscores the anti-India sentiment that is strongly expressed in the country. From a sharp rise in anti-India online posts to vandalism of symbols associated with the country, all cases of attacks have seen a massive rise in the United States, since the beginning of Trump’s second term in 2025, noting how political policies shape civil society.
