The recruitment process at the University of Toronto Scarborough (UTSC) has sparked controversy after critics claimed the job ad was preventing “white men” from applying. The Department of Biological Sciences is hiring a professor in Computational Biology and Data Science.
The position includes a Tier 2 Research Chair in Canada.“Selection will be limited to candidates who identify as members of one or more of four federally designated groups: women, sexual minorities, racialized/visible minorities, indigenous peoples, and persons with disabilities,” the job posting states.
All applicants are required to identify themselves as belonging to at least one of these groups in their application letter.
The requirements follow the provisions of the Ontario Human Rights Commission’s Special Programs and are part of UTSC’s Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Action Plan.Critics on social media reacted to the job ad by saying: “No white men allowed.” Supporters say the rules are intended to fix underrepresentation among Canadian research chairs and meet government equity requirements. The successful candidate must have a PhD in a relevant field and have at least two years of post-doctoral training with a record of excellence in research and teaching.
The successful professor will be expected to pursue interdisciplinary research, build a competitive externally funded program, and contribute to teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The university says it is committed to creating a welcoming scholarly community where everyone feels supported, and the appointment will contribute to that mission. Salaries for this position range from $138,000 to $153,000 CAD per year, with the potential for higher compensation for exceptional candidates.
