Two friends, Harshita Nair (21 years old) and Mahiyal Sran (20 years old), died when they were taking a nap near the keyhole on Bone Doon Beach, known for its treacherous waves. The incident occurred last Wednesday, and now the Sheriff’s Office has revealed the identity of the victims.

“I have no idea what happened. I’m still in shock,” Harisha Nair’s father told the New York Post.Both were alive when they were rescuedA witness called 911 at approximately 5 p.m. and multiple law enforcement agencies responded to the incident. Eight rescue swimmers entered the water. One woman was flown by helicopter to Yellow Bank Beach over the cliffs before being transported to a local hospital. Another woman was brought to Panther Beach and then transferred to an ambulance in a Stokes basket.Nair died shortly after being rescued while Sran remained in a local hospital in critical condition until Saturday.“Swimmers were able to locate the first victim and transport them to Panther Beach, where we began recovery efforts. A second victim was found further down the beach, and was towed to Yellow Bank Beach. Then Copter 614, a Cal Fire crane helicopter, was able to extract this patient from the beach, and CPR is also in progress,” a responder told KSBW 8.

Who are Harshita Nair and Mahiyal Sran?

Both friends were from Fremont. Nair was a legal studies major at UC Berkeley, scheduled to graduate in 2027. Sran was a public health student at San Jose State University. They are 2023 graduates of Washington High School in Fremont.Both were sleeping at the keyhole, an area that attracts unaware people, said Kyle Britton, Santa Cruz County Volunteer Fire Captain. “The tide comes in and, in this case, it swept away two sleeping patients, but what we also see is people going through the keyhole to get to Yellow Bank Beach and then getting stuck… because the tide comes in,” he explained.
