Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi wrote a letter to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in response to the recent US-Israeli strikes targeting the Bushehr nuclear power plant in Tehran.“The repeated attacks by aggressors in the vicinity of the active Bushehr nuclear power plant are of great concern,” Araqchi wrote in his letter. “They expose the entire area to a serious risk of radioactive contamination with serious humanitarian and environmental consequences.”This comes after a projectile fell near the vicinity of the Bushehr station on Saturday, killing a member of the physical protection crew at the site and causing damage to a nearby building.Reports confirmed that although auxiliary structures were affected, the main station and electricity production were not damaged.Araqchi stressed that the proximity of such strikes to an active nuclear facility creates an intolerable situation with the possibility of releasing radiation. He urged the need for international attention to prevent escalation around the nuclear infrastructure. The International Atomic Energy Agency, led by Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi, also expressed deep concern about the incident.
In a statement shared on X, the agency confirmed that this was the fourth attack near Bushehr in recent weeks.“Nuclear power plant sites and their surroundings should never be targeted. Additional buildings may contain important safety equipment. Maximum military restraint is essential to prevent a nuclear accident,” Grossi said. The International Atomic Energy Agency confirmed that there was no increase in radiation levels at the site, and stressed that attacks near nuclear facilities significantly increase the risk of potential accidents. The incident in Bushehr is part of a series of recent blows in the conflict in West Asia. The war, which began on February 28, includes Iran, Israel and the United States.
