Indian national Sandhu Poonachan, 36, has been charged with multiple serious offenses after a car plowed into pedestrians in Derby city centre, injuring seven people.The BBC reported that Bonachan faces charges including six counts of grievous bodily harm (GBH) with intent, one count of attempting to inflict grievous bodily harm (GBH) with intent, dangerous driving, and possession of a sharp object.Prosecutors said there was sufficient evidence and that pursuing the case was in the public interest.
The incident occurred at around 9:30pm on March 28 on Friar Gate, a busy street in Derby city centre. Police said a black Suzuki Swift drove up the sidewalk and hit pedestrians, causing panic in the area. Witnesses reported hearing loud bangs and screams as emergency services rushed to the scene near the Bishop’s Place pub.Seven people were injured, including four men and three women aged between 36 and 52 years. However, the injuries were not life-threatening, and several victims have since been released from hospital.
Police response
Punachan was initially arrested on suspicion of attempted murder before being formally charged.
Police explained that the incident is not being treated as an act of terrorism, and that there is no ongoing threat to the public, although counter-terrorism officers assisted as a precaution.Chief Superintendent Emma Alldred said the incident had “sent shockwaves through the community” and urged the public to avoid speculation that might impact the case. She also appealed to the authorities to provide CCTV, CCTV or mobile phone footage to assist in the investigation.
Who is Sandhu Bunachan?
Ponnachan, originally from India, has lived in the Alphaston area of Derby for several years. He was arrested minutes after the incident and was later presented before the magistrate court. During the short hearing, he confirmed his personal details and showed no emotion. He was remanded in custody and is due to appear at Derby Crown Court on April 29.
