The White House and Customs and Border Protection are using GTA VI stickers generated by artificial intelligence
Rockstar Games has found itself at the center of a political controversy after the White House and senior Trump administration officials used Grand Theft Auto VI-themed images to promote border security policies, sparking a social media debate among players and attracting a brief response from the game’s developer.Amid the growing controversy, gaming outlet Kotaku sought Rockstar’s reaction to management’s use of its images. The company’s response was remarkably brief. A Rockstar spokesman said: “No comment.”The dispute began after Rockstar officially revealed the cover art for GTA 6 and announced pre-orders for the upcoming title. As has become common in major Rockstar marketing campaigns, the reveal turned into a cultural moment as brands, public figures, and social media users began creating their own versions of the artwork and logo.Among those joining the trend was the official White House social media account, which shared a GTA VI-style image focusing on US President Donald Trump. The post went viral, with many users pointing out the irony of a government account endorsing images from a franchise that has long questioned authority, law enforcement, and political institutions. The discussion intensified when US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) shared its own AI-generated image of the GTA.
The post, which features stylized agents, a CBP helicopter and border landscapes, said the administration had effectively “secured the border” before GTA 6’s release.
The meme was accompanied by a link to a Breitbart report showing law enforcement numbers provided by CBP. According to the article, the agency has recorded 13 straight months of not releasing any illegal immigrants apprehended at the U.S.-Mexico border.
It also reported that the number of apprehensions at the southwest border in May 2026 was 9,998, a number CBP said was 94 percent lower than the monthly average during the Biden administration.“Strict border security measures enacted by the Trump administration have kept monthly illegal border crossing arrests at unprecedented levels,” the report stated. The article also noted an increase in drug seizures, claiming that nationwide seizures of cocaine, methamphetamine, heroin, fentanyl, and marijuana were up 32 percent compared to May 2024.
Fentanyl seizures in May 2026 reportedly rose 72 percent compared to April.MAGA supporters applauded the use of GTA’s viral format to draw attention to enforcement policies, and players questioned whether taxpayer-funded government accounts should be posting online memes and AI-generated images of such a sensitive issue. The controversy grew further when US Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F.
Kennedy Jr. posted an edited version of Rockstar’s GTA 6 reveal video. Sharing the clip with the caption, “We flipped the food pyramid before we got GTA 6,” a version of Kennedy featured himself, Trump, and several AI-generated characters dressed as foodstuffs.Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled to be released in November 2026 and is expected to become one of the biggest entertainment releases in history. It will succeed Grand Theft Auto V, which was released in 2013 and became one of the best-selling video games of all time. According to publisher Take-Two Interactive, GTA V has sold more than 215 million copies worldwide and generated billions of dollars in revenue over the past decade.
