'Reckless Russian interference': RAF plane carrying British Defense Secretary hit by GPS jamming near Russian border

An RAF plane carrying British Defense Secretary John Healey

An RAF plane carrying British Defense Secretary John Healey reportedly had its GPS signals jammed for nearly three hours while flying near the Russian border, raising fresh concerns about Moscow’s increasingly aggressive cyber warfare tactics.Haley was returning to the UK on Thursday after visiting British forces stationed in Estonia when the incident occurred, according to a report by The Times. The plane, a Dassault Falcon 900LX, is believed to have encountered intentional electronic interference suspected to have originated from Russia.

The pilots had to switch navigation systems

The jamming attack reportedly disabled the aircraft’s GPS for the duration of the flight, forcing RAF pilots to rely on alternative navigation methods.

Passengers on board, including journalists and photographers, were informed that the plane remained safe to operate despite the malfunction. The interference also affected connectivity on board, leaving smartphones and laptops unable to access internet services during the flight. The British Ministry of Defense told Agence France-Presse: “This is reckless Russian intervention, but the RAF is well prepared to deal with this activity.”

Was Haley deliberately targeted?

Officials have not confirmed whether Healy himself was the intended target. However, reports indicated that the plane’s path was publicly visible on flight tracking platforms, making it easily identifiable. The incident comes amid rising tensions between NATO allies and Russia over military activity near Eastern Europe and the Black Sea region.

Dangerous Russian encounters over the Black Sea

The GPS jamming incident came to light just a day after Britain revealed that two Russian fighter jets carried out what the Ministry of Defense called “serious” intercepts of an RAF surveillance plane over the Black Sea last month.According to the Ministry of Defense, a Russian Sukhoi Su-35 flew close enough to trigger the spy plane’s emergency systems and disable the autopilot.Another Sukhoi Su-27 reportedly made six aggressive passes, at one point being just six meters from the nose of the RAF aircraft. The participating British aircraft was a Boeing RC-135 Rivet Joint reconnaissance aircraft operating as part of a NATO patrol mission to monitor Russian military activity.

“UK commitment will not deter”: Haley

In his reaction to recent Russian air confrontations, Healey praised the professionalism of RAF personnel and insisted that Britain would continue to support NATO operations despite mounting provocations. The BBC quoted Haley as saying, “Let me be very clear: This incident will not prevent the United Kingdom’s commitment to defending NATO, our allies and our interests in the face of Russian aggression.”

Repeating the 2024 incident

This is not the first case of its kind involving senior British officials. In March 2024, an RAF plane carrying former British Defense Secretary Grant Shapps also experienced GPS interference while flying near Russian territory after a visit to Poland. This disruption lasted about 30 minutes and was widely linked to Russian electronic warfare capabilities.
